Best for a new business, or one where most work comes through word of mouth.
Up to three pages that cover the essentials: what you do, who for, what it costs, and how to reach you. The right choice when you are new, when most of your work comes through word of mouth, or when you need something real for people to find when they Google your name.
You get the design and build, a contact form that lands in your inbox, a WhatsApp button and a tap to call number, your Google Business Profile set up to match the site, the domain and hosting set up in your name, and one round of changes. Usually live in one to two weeks.
Not this one if you want to add your own news or offers later, need bookings or payments, or need more than three pages. Those want Business.

Best for an established business that wants each service on its own page.
Four to eight pages, so each service gets its own page and its own chance to show up in search. For an established business that usually means a home page, a page per service, an about page and a contact page.
On top of the Starter build you get booking links, an editor so you can change your text, prices and news yourself, and two rounds of changes. Online payments and a blog can be added. Usually live in two to three weeks.
Not this one if you sell products online or need customer accounts. That is a Custom build, quoted from £2,500.

A page means one layout and one set of text. You send me the information for it and I lay it out and tidy up the wording. A shop, a booking system or a members area is not a page, and is quoted separately.
Extra pages are £100 each on Business, after the eighth page. Starter is up to three pages and does not take extra pages, so a site that needs four or more pages is a Business site. Starting with Starter does not lock you in. You can move up to Business later by paying the difference between the two prices.
Technical SEO basics come with every package. That means a title and description for each page, a sitemap, LocalBusiness structured data and pages built to load fast. They do not guarantee where it ranks.

We talk first, on the phone or over a coffee in Stockport, then I send a fixed price in writing. Pick a package to see the split.
Custom builds are quoted per project and paid the same way. No VAT is charged, as the business is not VAT registered.

Been offered a website for a monthly fee?
A monthly price and a fixed price are hard to compare until you multiply one of them out. There is a table of what three years costs either way, and three things worth checking in the contract before you sign.
Questions
The ones that come up most.
How long does it take?
A Starter site is usually live in one to two weeks. A Business site takes two to three weeks, mostly depending on how quickly I get your text and photos.
What do you need from me?
What you do and who for, your prices, your logo, and your photos. If you have not written anything yet, the page by page list I send when the deposit is paid takes each page in turn and asks you plain questions, so you are filling in answers rather than writing a website. If you would rather someone else wrote it all for you, that is a copywriter's job, priced by them.
How much of my time will this take?
Twenty minutes on the phone at the start. Then the part only you can do, which is sending me your text and photos. The page by page list I send asks plain questions, and most people spend an hour or two on it. After that you look at a private link and tell me what to change. The waiting is mostly on my side, not yours.
Do you write the content?
You provide the information and I shape it. That means I cut it down, put the important part first, and write the headings and buttons so the page reads well. What I do not do is invent what your business says about itself from scratch, because you know that better than I do.
What if I do not like the first version?
You see it before you pay for it. The first version goes on a private link you can try on your phone and your laptop, and nothing more is due at that point. Starter includes one round of changes and Business includes two, so you tell me what is wrong and I put it right. The balance is only invoiced once the site is ready to go live. Your deposit holds time in my schedule so it is not refundable once I have started, which is why I would rather find out at the first version that we want different things than at the end.
Is it built from a template?
No. Every site is built from scratch in code, so the layout and the structure follow what your business actually does rather than what a theme expects. There is no page builder underneath it, which is also why there are no plugins to keep updated and nothing to patch.
Can you build a design I already have?
Yes, whether it came from a designer or is a mockup you have put together yourself. It is built properly, on your own domain, and priced the same way as any other site, by the pages and features it needs, using the comparison table. Any placeholder words, reviews or figures in a mockup are replaced with your real ones before it goes live.
What if I have no logo or photos?
I build sites rather than design logos, so bring me the files you have. With no logo I set your business name in type, which suits most small businesses anyway. With no photos I use good stock images, though real photos of you and your work will always pull in more enquiries.
Do I own the site?
Yes. The domain and hosting are in your name from day one, and the site and its code are yours once the final invoice is paid. If you ever want to move on, you take everything with you.
What does hosting cost?
Nothing, for a normal site. The domain is around £10 a year and you pay for it directly.
Can I update it myself?
Business and Custom include a simple editor for your text, prices and news. Starter does not. On any site I have built, you can send me the change instead and I will do it, from £10.
How do I pay you?
The deposit by card link or by bank transfer, whichever suits you. Card payments are handled by Stripe, so card numbers never reach this site. The balance is invoiced when the site is ready to go live, on 14 day terms, and the site goes live once it is paid.
Are you insured?
Yes. Viaduct Web holds professional indemnity and public liability insurance, arranged through PolicyBee.
What happens if you stop trading?
Your domain, hosting and accounts are in your name from day one, so if I disappear tomorrow you lose nothing. Your site keeps running, your email keeps working, and any other developer can pick it up. There is no account of mine that your business depends on. It is in my terms.
Can my site take payments?
Yes, as an add on to Business, and included on a Custom build. Starter does not take payments. On Business that means deposits, bookings or monthly plans, through Stripe or PayPal, and a full shop is a Custom build. Your customers pay on a secure page and the money goes to your bank.
Do the privacy and terms pages use up my pages?
No. The privacy notice, the thank you page and the not found page come with every site and are not counted. I write the privacy notice from what your site actually does, such as where your enquiries go and who handles them. Terms and conditions for your business are a legal document, so if you have them I will lay them out as a page at no extra charge, and if you do not, that is one for a solicitor.
Do I need a cookie banner?
Usually not. The visitor stats I fit as standard do not use cookies, so there is nothing to ask permission for, and this site has no banner for the same reason. If you want something that does use them, like Google Ads tracking, the banner is part of the job.
